CO ( 4 – 3 ) and CO ( 3 – 2 ) studies of M 51 and NGC 6946

چکیده
We have mapped several nearby galaxies in the CO(4–3) line transition with the Heinrich-Hertz-Telescope on Mt. Graham, Arizona, during an excellent weather period in December 1998. Here we report on our observations of M 51 and NGC 6946. The results suggest a concentration of highly excited CO gas to the nuclei of these galaxies. Moreover, in both objects CO(4–3) line emission was also detected for the first time in the spiral arms, several kiloparsecs away from the centre.

Ci and Co in the Spiral Galaxies Ngc 6946 and M 83
We present J=2–1, J=3–2, J=4–3 CO and 492 GHz [CI] maps as well as J=2–1 and J=3–2 CO measurements of the late type spiral galaxies NGC 6946 and M 83 (NGC 5236). Both galaxies contain a pronounced molecular gas concentration in rapid solid-body rotation within a few hundred parsec from their nucleus. NGC 6946 and M 83 have nearly identical relative intensities in the CO, CO and [CI] transitions...
متن کاملMolecular gas in NGC 6946
We present imaging of molecular gas emission in the star-forming spiral galaxy NGC 6946. Our 12 CO(1-0) and 12 CO(3-2) images, made at 22 ′′ resolution with the IRAM 30-m and the Heinrich Hertz 10-m radio telescopes, are the most extensive observations of molecular gas in this galaxy and are among the most extensive observations of molecular gas in any spiral galaxy. The 12 CO(1-0) emission sho...
متن کاملCO ( 1 - 0 ) , CO ( 2 - 1 ) and Neutral Gas in NGC 6946 : Molecular Gas in a Late - Type , Gas Rich , Spiral Galaxy
We present “On The Fly” maps of the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission covering a 10 × 10 region of the NGC 6946. Using our CO maps and archival VLA HI observations we create a total gas surface density map, Σgas, for NGC 6946. The predominantly molecular inner gas disk transitions smoothly into an atomic outer gas disk, with equivalent atomic and molecular gas surface densities at R = 3.5 (6 kpc). W...

We present the results of a search for molecular gas emission via the CO line in the far outer disk of the nearby spiral, NGC 6946. The positions targeted were chosen to lie on or near previously-identified outer disk HII regions. Molecular gas was clearly detected out to 1.3 R25, with a further tentative detection at 1.4 R25. The CO detections show excellent agreement with the HI velocities an...
متن کاملAstronomy and Astrophysics Mapping the Submillimeter Spiral Wave in Ngc 6946
We have analysed SCUBA 850µm images of the (near) face-on spiral galaxy NGC 6946, paying particular attention to the subtraction of sky signal. A comparison with both 21cm HI and 12 CO(2-1) intensity maps reveals a tight correlation between dust thermal emission and molecular gas at the kiloparsec level. By means of a Monte Carlo radiative transfer model, we convert a B-K colour image of NGC 69...
